Tuesday, June 11, 2024 – There are several local road closures taking place this week and weekend. Wednesday – Nighttime closures on 105 (https://wataugaonline.com/nighttime-closures-scheduled-for-n-c-105/). Wednesday & Thursday – Blue Ridge Parkway closure near Blowing Rock (https://wataugaonline.com/blue-ridge-parkway-implements-two-day-closure-between-milepost-298-5-and-305-near-blowing-rock-nc/). Friday & Saturday – Closures in downtown Boone for Boonerang Music & Arts Festival (https://wataugaonline.com/road-closures-and-parking-for-boonerang-music-arts-festival/).

Thursday May 16 – Flaggers will be stationed at approximately 1587 U.S. Hwy 421 N to repair a speed hump. Flaggers will be stationed all day today, May 16, and traffic will be reduced to one lane. Motorists are advised to drive with caution during the length of the repair.


BLOWING ROCK –

The intersection of Sunset Drive and Main Street will be closed for Sunset Drive traffic on May 1st 2024 after 8:00 AM. The intersection will be closed for Sunset Drive but Main Street will remain open for controlled traffic flow.  The plan is to install a sewer manhole at that location with the goal to reopen the intersection around 2:00 PM for school release and pick up.

Sunset Drive will be closed at Ransom Street with local traffic access to businesses and the school bus lot, but access to Main Street will be closed during the construction.


BREAKING 7:58 pm – US HWY 321 is now open according to the Blowing Rock Police Department.

On Thursday, April 18th beginning at 7:00 pm and ending at 5:00 am, Deerfield Road will be closed at 381 Deerfield Road due to a sewer line repair. Both entrances to the Watauga Medical Center will be accessible. Motorists are advised to drive with caution in this area during the length of the repair. No services are expected to be affected. ***4pm – Deerfield Road is back open*** Friday April 12 2:04pm – Deerfield Road is currently closed near the intersection of Camp Rock and Deerfield due to a downed power line. Crews are on the scene and working to resolve the issue, no exact time frame for when the road will reopen.

UPDATE From Blowing Rock Police – US 321 North and South bound lanes are currently closed just south of Rock Rd in Blowing Rock due to a rockslide. NCDOT is in route with equipment please be patient and utilize BlackBerry Rd to travel around this area.

TRAFFIC ALERT/Road Closed Thursday April 11, 2024 – Due to an early morning structure fire The connection of Broadstone Road and 194 South are closed until 7 am this morning. There is no travel to or from Boone this way. A different route will need to be used until after 7am.

Monday December 11 – State Farm Road will be reduced to one lane beginning at Ivy Terrace Drive and ending at Racquet Road due to a water leak. It is uncertain if water service will be affected at this time. Start Farm Road will be reduced to one lane for several hours. Motorists are advised to take alternate routes at this time.

Traffic Alert Wednesday, November 29, – Queen Street will be closed beginning at 288 Queen Street and ending at the intersection of Queen Street and N. Water Street will be closed the majority of the day for a sewer line replacement. Flaggers will be stationed in order to help direct the flow of traffic. ***4:49pm – Per scanner dispatch both lanes are back open*** ***2:53pm – 1 lane of 105 at the bridge is open according to Watauga County Fire Marshal Shane Garland. Expect continued backups in that area for quite sometime.*** 1:44pm Tuesday Nov 21 – Hwy 105 is shut down at Broadstone Road due to falling rock. Traffic is being detoured, expect these delays throughout the afternoon.

Traffic Alert – Friday, November 3, 9:05 am – Two tractor-trailers have wrecked on 105 near the Avery County line. 105 is shut down currently in that area.

UPDATE Tuesday, October 31, 2:42 pm – Expect continued delays on Highway 105 at the bridge project. Shane Garland, Watauga County Fire Marshal, tells WataugaOnline that clean-up will take much longer than expected due to some large boulders that fell during blasting. It is now expected to be into the night before all that clean-up can be completed. ALTERNATIVE ROUTES ARE HIGHLY SUGGESTED! For more information visit this link.

Traffic Alert – Tuesday, October 31 – King Street, Depot Street, and Grand Boulevard Closed Beginning at 5:00 pm.

For the safety of the patrons of Boone BOO!, the Town of Boone's annual Halloween event, King Street (beginning at Appalachian Street and ending at Burrell/Water Street), Depot Street (beginning at Howard Street and ending at Queen Street), and Grand Boulevard (beginning at King Street and ending at Orchard Street) will be closed. The closure will begin at 5:00pm and end at approximately 7:30pm.

Metered parking will remain available until 4:00pm, in which vehicle owners will be asked to move. Any vehicle remaining within the closed portion of Downtown Boone listed above will not be able to move until the streets reopen, barring any emergency. Queen Street will remain open for parking for the event, and the lower parking lot of the First Baptist Church and the parking lot for the Austin and Barnes Funeral Home will be open for parking beginning at 5:00pm.


Traffic Alert – Monday, October 30 – App State has a waterline leak that is being repaired adjacent to the outside westbound lane of Rivers Street near the tennis courts. App State personnel expect the repair to last the next day or two. A portion of the outside westbound lane of Rivers Street is closed between Hill Street. and Center Street.

Traffic Alert – Thursday, October 26 1:40pm – Wreck- area of 321 at Niley Cook Roads. Extended delays.

Traffic Alert – Thursday, October 26 – Queen Street, beginning at N. Depot Street and ending at Grand Boulevard, will be closed to thru traffic beginning at 8:00am today.

Motorists should allow extra travel time this weekend, as two local football games and surrounding events take place. More information at this link.

Tuesday October 24 – Highway 105 will be reduced to one-lane coming into Town, beginning at 1435 Hwy NC-105 and ending at Wilson Drive, for maintenance. Motorists are advised to drive carefully and remain aware in this area. The lane is set to reopen at the end of the day today, October 24th. Allow extra travel time in and around the App State campus on Saturday. Fall Open House will be taking place. Around 3,000 folks are expected for the event.

Thursday, October 5th – Burrell Street will be reduced to one lane, beginning at Rivers Street and ending at King Street, due to continued utility work. The closure is set to last until 3:30pm today. Thursday, October 5th -Meadowview Drive will be closed beginning at 11:00am today, October 5th, for continued bridge repairs. The road is set to be open at around 2:00pm-3:00pm. Motorists are advised to take other routes. For more information, please contact Public Works at (828) 268-6230.

Wednesday Oct 4 12:52pm – Overturn concrete truck on Broadstone Road near the horse farm. Expect major delays in that area. An alternative route is suggested.

The northbound lane of Burrell Street from Rivers Street to King Street will be closed this morning. The southbound lane of Burrell Street will remain open.

Additionally, both lanes of Burrell Street will be closed on October 4th beginning at West King Street and ending at Rivers Street for utility work. Burrell Street is set to be closed the majority of the day. Service will be affect at the Appletree Apartments (150 Water Street) and Proper Restaurant (142 Water Street). Meadowview Drive, beginning at Blowing Rock Road and ending at Ivy Drive, will be closed today, October 2nd, for bridge repairs. The closure is set to last the majority of the day. Motorists are advised to take alternate routes. For more information, contact Public Works at (828) 268-6230.

Friday September 29 – Meadowview Drive, beginning at Blowing Rock Road and ending at Ivy Drive, will be closed today, September 29th, for bridge repairs. Just like yesterday, North Depot Street, beginning at the intersection of North Depot Street and West King Street and ending at the intersection of North Depot Street and Queen Street, will be closed today, September 22nd, due to an installation of a water tap for new construction. North Depot Street is set to be closed for the majority of the day. Motorists are advised to use North Water Street as an alternate route for Queen Street. North Depot Street, beginning at the intersection of North Depot Street and West King Street and ending at the intersection of North Depot Street and Queen Street, will be closed today, September 21st, due to an installation of a water tap for new construction. North Depot Street is set to be closed for the majority of the day, and no service is set to be interrupted. Motorists are advised to use North Water Street as an alternate route for Queen Street. A section of Winklers Creek Road behind Boone Mall up to Rocky Creek Road will be closed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, September 8, 2023, to ensure public safety while Blue Ridge Energy conducts right-of-way trimming.

Tuesday August 29 – Stadium Drive will be closed to through traffic from Tanglewood Drive to Dogwood Road for resurfacing for the majority of the day. Resurfacing is set to take one day, weather permitting.

Additionally, Meadowview Drive will be closed beginning at Rogers Drive and ending at Greenway Road due to a water leak. Water service may be affected for residents within this area. Motorists will be redirected to Zeb Street during this time.

Traffic Alert – Friday August 25th 7:55am – Reported multi-vehicle wreck on 421 in Deep Gap. Expect delays.

Thursday August 24 – Motorists and residents are advised to be aware of bicycles on the roads Saturday morning in the areas of Sugar Grove, Mabel and Zionville, Sutherland, Creston, Todd and Meat Camp as the Cowbelle Classic Ride takes place. The event is an annual women’s only cycling event with 4 different rides – a 15 mile, 20 mile, 35 mile and 65 mile. It all starts at 8am from the Old Cove Creek School.

Traffic Alert – Friday August 18 5:45pm – Wreck – area of 105 bypass above the old bread store. Expect delays.

Piedmont Natural Gas will be starting repair work on a 4″ natural gas main in two locations beginning Friday August 11 along NC 184 Shawneehaw Avenue In Banner Elk. They will start on Friday at the old hospital just southeast of Shawneehaw Ave/Hickory Nut Gap Road intersection. The northbound lane will be shifted to the center left turn lane during work at this location which will allow to keep moving.

The second location is immediately past the Shawneehaw Avenue South and Dobbins Road intersection. This repair work will require a lane closure due to the location of the gas line.


Bodenheimer Drive will be closed to through traffic beginning Monday, May 22, and continuing through Friday, August 11. App State will be repairing steam vaults that supply heat to Appalachian Heights, the Living Learning Center and Mountaineer Hall. Structural repairs to failing portions of the road will also be made at this time.

The road will be closed at the Mountaineer Hall bus stop, except for emergency vehicle access and special events. Access to the Living Learning Center and Student Recreation Center will be available via the lower portion of Bodenheimer Drive. All traffic to Mountaineer Hall and facilities beyond it will be detoured via Poplar Grove Road and Feids Way. Sidewalks will remain open allowing pedestrian access.

Saturday July 29 9am – There is a water main break on Wintergreen Lane in Boone. The road will be closed until further notice and there may be some water losses in the area.

Saturday July 29 – Allow extra travel time in and around Boone and the App State campus for the Darius Rucker concert at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Show starts at 7:30pm.

Thursday July 27 – Meadowview Drive, from Greenway Road to Zeb Street, will continue to be closed today, July 27th, for continued sidewalk construction.

Wednesday July 26 – Meadowview Drive, from Greenway Road to Zeb Street, will continue to be closed until 3:00pm today for continued sidewalk construction.

Wednesday 26 – Closure of the right hand southbound lane down of Blowing Rock Rd. (1302 Blowing Rock Rd.) from the 3rd entrance/exit at the Speedway to shortly before the intersection of Meadowview Dr. from 9 A.M. to 4P.M. This will be a one day lane closing.

Thursday July 20 – Burrell Street will be reduced to one lane for the majority of the day for utility maintenance. The lane closure will alternate throughout the day, however, one lane will remain open at all times. Water service will not be affected. Thursday July 20 – Stadium Drive, beginning at Hemlock Drive and ending at Tanglewood Drive, will be reduced to one lane of traffic beginning at 10 am and ending at roughly 6 pm. Meadowview Drive will be closed all day today, July 17th, beginning at Greenway Road and ending at Zeb Street, for sidewalk work. Please plan your route accordingly.

Traffic Alert – Wednesday July 12 – The road will be closed at 260 Howard Street in Boone for the majority of the day for a water tap. All businesses will be accessible.

Traffic Alert – Wednesday July 12 – The road will be closed again today on Oak Street, in Boone, beginning at E. King Street and ending at Windy Drive. Additionally, the intersection of Oak Street and Windy Street will be closed as well. Windy Drive traffic will enter and exit through Hillside Drive.

Tuesday July 11 2:30pm – Be aware that the right hand lane of Hwy 105 coming into Boone beginning at approximately 1435 NC-105 (Enterprise Rent-a-Car) and ending at approximately 1286 NC-105 (Troy's Diner) will be closed for 4-5 hours due to a water leak. All traffic will be reduced to one lane in this area. Additionally, water service will be affected within this stretch of highway. The businesses which will be affected have been notified.

****update 5:23 pm. All lanes are open back.*** ****update 4:48 pm. Southbound lanes are being opened. – Traffic Alert Thursday June 29 4:24pm – Currently 321 S. in Blowing Rock is closed down due to a major traffic crash. The area affected if approximately 1 mile south of Green Park Inn. Please avoid this area if you can.

Traffic Alert Monday June 26 8:46am – Fallen tree on Poplar Grove Road between Fun n Wheels and Bodenheimer Drive. Boone Fire and DOT on scene. Expect extended delays.

The temporary, full closure around Price Lake bridge will be in place from Monday, June 5, through Tuesday, June 20. The detour will route travelers off the Parkway between milepost 296.4 and 296.8. More information at this link.

Traffic Delays at the Corner of Queen Street and North Water Street for the Week of May 22nd

Expect possible traffic delays/different traffic pattern at the corner of Queen Street and North Water Street during the week of May 22nd due to sidewalk work. For more information, please contact Public Works at (828) 268-6230.


On business days from May 17-23, New River Light & Power will be performing underground utility work on Hardin St near the intersection of Dauph Blan St and near Stick Boy Bread Co.  There will be a north bound single lane closure on occasion between 9am and 4pm once work commences.  The closure will start just past Hardin/Rivers St intersection (The Tapp Room) and end near Stick Boy Bread Co. 


The Town of Boone Public Works Department wants to make you aware that Faculty Street, beginning at the intersection of Faculty Street and Wintergreen Lane and ending at the intersection of Highland Avenue, will be undergoing street maintenance which will lead to a closure of the road.

Street maintenance will begin Wednesday, May 17 at 8:00 a.m. and end at 3:00 p.m. Additionally, water service will be off during this time. The following businesses and apartment complexes will affected:
Summerwood Condominiums (286 Faculty Street), The Brooke’s Apartments (302 Faculty Street), The Standard (850 Blowing Rock Road), and Viscous Biscuit, Palm Berries, and Dominos (702 Blowing Rock Road).

Traffic Alert 3:44pm – Wednesday May 17 – Wreck with multiple vehicles – area of 7095 Highway 421 North in the Cove Creek Fire district. Expect delays.

Tuesday May 16 – A portion of Tracy Circle beginning at Mac Street and ending at Edgewood Drive will be closed for the most of the day today, May 16th, for storm drain maintenance. For more information, please contact Public Works at (828) 268-6230.

Thursday May 11 – All of Ridgewood Drive, up to 385 Queen Street, will be closed today, May 11, for a water line replacement. Water service will be affected later on today. Road will be closed for 4-5 hours. For more information, please contact Public Utilities at (828) 268-6250.


On Tuesday April 25, Faculty Street, beginning at McDonalds and ending at Highland Avenue, will be closed by Blue Ridge Energy for powerline maintenance. The closure will begin at 7:30 am and end at 5:30 pm. Please take alternate routes during this time.

Traffic Alert Monday April 24 11:14am – Wreck – area of Old 421 & George's Gap Road. Expect possible delays in that area.

Beginning today, April 24, and ending in two weeks, the sidewalk in front of Mast General Store (Boone location) will be closed between 8:00am to 5:00pm. Additionally, the designated lane for left-hand turns will be used as the only lane. This means all traffic going straight, right, and left will need to use this lane between 8:00am to 5:00pm.

Wednesday April 12 – New Market Centre will be closed beginning today, April 12, for an extended period of time for stormwater pipe replacement. The entrance to Regal Cinemas from New Market Boulevard will be open, however all other traffic will be redirected to other entrances for New Market Centre. All businesses will be open in New Market Centre.

Traffic Alert Monday November 7 5:14pm – According to incoming report a truck with a trailer is jackknifed in the area of Boone Mountain/421 in Vilas. Backups are occurring, allow extra travel time.

BOONE – The N.C. Department of Transportation is temporarily closing one northbound lane of U.S. 221 in Boone this week. The closure is expected to last through Nov. 4 at 3 p.m. Maintenance crews will be replacing a drainage structure during the closure.  Motorists are reminded to slow down and remain alert while approaching the work zone.

Law enforcement is on the scene and has some of the area at the Appalachian Theatre blocked off. Also part of the area at the Holmes Center on campus is blocked off.

To follow up on a previous traffic post – most, if not all, of the downtown crowd has moved along. The crowds at this time, 7:57pm, are nowhere near what occurred after the Michigan win in 2007.

7:51am update from Watauga Schools – ALERT: Due to an ongoing automobile fire on Hwy 421, please avoid Watauga High School until further notice. Students and staff who are arriving now will remain safely inside the building. We will send updates as we are notified by emergency services.

*UPDATE 7:58am from Watauga Schools – UPDATE: We've been given the all clear. Hwy 421 will remain closed near Bamboo for now. WHS is open and ready to start the day once students arrive. Students will not be counted tardy.

UPDATE 8:09am – Two lanes of outbound traffic on 421 are back open, inbound is still closed.

UPDATE 8:15am – Other roads that were closed are back open except inbound on 421. Police remain in those areas directing traffic if needed.

From NCSHP Thursday July 22 4:32pm – Troopers are currently assisting with a road closure on US 321 in Caldwell County near Hudson between Mission Road and Pine Mountain Road due to a gas leak.  At approximately 2:00 p.m., a construction company reportedly struck a main gas line while digging beside the roadway.  Both north and southbound lanes are expected to be closed in the area until after midnight.  The NC State Highway Patrol is working with the NC Department of Transportation and local authorities on a detour.  Motorists are encouraged to utilize alternate routes.

Update Monday Feb 17 11:50am – According to scanner dispatch there was/is a transformer on fire on #AppState campus that has lead to power outages. Not totally sure which areas are impacted currently. Use caution when approaching traffic lights if they are out.
