BANNER ELK, N.C.─ Calling all high schoolers with a passion for animals and a desire to build a career in the field of wildlife science. Each year, Lees-McRae College hosts two weeks of intensive Wildlife Science Summer Programs for high school students who have an interest in the field, and registration for the 2024 sessions is now open!
These programs offer a one-of-a-kind opportunity to become immersed in the world of wildlife biology and rehabilitation and experience what it’s like to study these disciplines at Lees-McRae. Throughout the program, students lodge in campus housing where they have direct access to all the resources the college has to offer including the May Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, the Elk Valley Preserve and Field Station, fully outfitted collegiate laboratories, and the richly diverse South Campus at Grandfather Home property.
“Getting to experience what I’m going to experience in college and getting some skills before—getting to work with the ambassadors or getting a peek at what lectures are like—and just getting a lot of information from mentors before I’m even here has been a wonderful experience,” Mallory Joyner, an attendee of the 2023 Wildlife Science Summer Programs, said.
There are two weeks of programming—week one from Sunday, June 16−Saturday, June 22, and week two from Sunday, June 23−Saturday, June 29—and students can sign up for one or both sessions. Attendance costs include lodging, meals, camp insurance, instruction, materials and supplies, field trips, any necessary transportation, and a camp t-shirt/souvenir.
