BOONE — The Watauga County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a phone scam involving callers falsely claiming to represent the agency.
The sheriff's office said it has received multiple reports of suspicious calls from blocked numbers. The callers claim to be with the sheriff's office and request a callback to discuss a “matter.”
Officials said the calls are not legitimate and urged residents not to respond.
“We will never demand personal information, payment, or immediate action over the phone,” the sheriff's office said in a statement.
The agency advised residents who receive such calls to hang up immediately and not provide any personal information. Residents should not return calls to unfamiliar numbers claiming to be from law enforcement.
Anyone with questions or who wishes to report a suspicious call may contact the Watauga County Sheriff's Office at 828-264-3761.
