New Health Sciences Facility at CCC&TI to Address Critical Workforce Needs

Last Updated on April 6, 2025 10:46 am

Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute has announced that a new health science facility is being planned for the college’s Caldwell Campus in Hudson. CCC&TI received funding for the project through a series of state budget allocations over the last few years. The new facility will be a state-of-the-art teaching and learning center with a simulated hospital environment, as well as a variety of labs and classroom spaces that will allow the college’s health sciences programs to be co-located in one facility. At 65,000 square feet, the facility will be the largest building on the Caldwell Campus when completed.

According to recent research, North Carolina will face a critical shortage of healthcare professionals over the next decade, particularly in areas such as nursing. One study estimates that by 2033, our state will have a shortage of about 12,500 registered nurses and 5,000 practical nurses1. CCC&TI’s new building will help address these shortages by expanding capacity in its current health sciences programs as well as providing space for additional program offerings to be added in the future. These efforts will help ensure that everyone in our community continues to have access to high-quality healthcare and well-trained healthcare professionals.

Architectural firm Clark Nexsen and general contractor Vannoy Construction are leading the building project with input from CCC&TI administration and health sciences faculty as well as regional healthcare partners and providers on the design of the new facility.

Architectural renderings were presented to the College’s Board of Trustees last fall, along with detailed design plans and a virtual tour of the new building. One of the highlights planned for the facility is a terrace facing Highway 321 that will provide space for a variety of events for students, employees, and the community. The new facility will also connect to the third floor of the existing Faye A. Broyhill (H) Building, which will also receive some updates for a seamless connection between the two buildings.

“This will be a transformational addition to our Caldwell Campus and will provide much needed additional classroom and lab space for all of our health sciences programs,” said CCC&TI President, Dr. Mark Poarch. “This new facility will allow us to expand our programs while also providing the latest in healthcare equipment and teaching tools to better prepare students for careers in the field, which benefits not only our students but everyone in our community.”

Construction on the facility is projected to begin in late 2025. A special groundbreaking ceremony will also be planned later this year to commemorate the start of what promises to be a momentous project for both the college and the community. The construction phase of the facility will take approximately two years.
