NCSHP Member Involved in Shooting with Armed Individual

RALEIGH — On Saturday, December 6, at 4:21 p.m., a member of the State Highway Patrol was dispatched to a collision on Grace Chapel Rd. in Granite Falls(Caldwell County). Prior to the member’s arrival, it was reported by first responders on the scene that an involved party was armed with a handgun. The member arrived at the collision scene and encountered the armed individual.  The subject continued to display a handgun and was not complying with the member’s commands.  The member fired a duty issued weapon striking the suspect. The suspect was secured, and aid was immediately rendered.

The suspect was transported from the scene but was pronounced deceased shortly thereafter. The involved State Highway Patrol member was unharmed. The suspect was identified as Scott Patrick Seagle (48-year-old white male) of Hickory, NC.  The member is identified as Senior Trooper William Miller.  Senior Trp. Miller is a 5-year veteran of the State Highway Patrol and is assigned to Troop F, District 3 (Caldwell County). 

In accordance with agency protocol in any trooper-involved shooting, the involved member will be placed on administrative duty.  The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is conducting an independent investigation of the incident.
