HIGH COUNTRY – The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning for northwest North Carolina, southwest and west central Virginia, and southeast West Virginia, effective from 7 a.m. Monday, December 29, through noon Tuesday, December 30.
Wind Expectations: West winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are expected, especially at higher elevations.
Affected Areas in North Carolina: Watauga, Ashe, and Alleghany counties. Cities affected include Boone, West Jefferson, and Sparta.
Affected Areas in Virginia: Giles, Grayson, Carroll, Floyd, Craig, Alleghany, Bath, Roanoke, Botetourt, and Rockbridge counties. Cities affected include Floyd, Fincastle, Galax, New Castle, Troutdale, Pearisburg, Salem, Hot Springs, Buena Vista, Volney, Covington, Clifton Forge, Whitetop, Lexington, Duo, and Roanoke.
Affected Areas in West Virginia: Western Greenbrier County. Cities affected include Quinwood and Rainelle.
Potential Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
Safety Recommendations: Residents should remain in the lower levels of their homes during the windstorm and avoid windows. Watch for falling debris and tree limbs. Use caution if you must drive.
A High Wind Warning means hazardous high winds are expected or occurring. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage and power outages.
