Avery County Launches Special Occupant Sticker Program to Help First Responders Assist Residents with Autism, Special Needs

Last Updated on March 19, 2026 10:40 am

Avery County EMS, the Avery County Sheriff's Department, and Avery County Emergency Management have joined forces to launch a Special Occupant Sticker program aimed at helping first responders better serve community members with autism or other special needs.

The stickers are designed to be placed on a home or vehicle to alert responding personnel that an occupant may be non-verbal or require additional care and understanding during an emergency situation. The program recognizes that a stressful emergency can be particularly challenging for individuals with developmental or communication differences, and that a simple visual cue can help first responders adjust their approach before making contact.

“In a stressful situation, this quick visual cue helps first responders adjust their approach, ensuring safer, more understanding interactions,” according to the program announcement.

The stickers are intended for households with individuals on the autism spectrum, individuals with developmental or communication challenges, and anyone who may need extra assistance during an emergency.

Residents interested in obtaining a sticker can contact Avery County EMS directly. Stickers are available for pickup at the EMS facility Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
