Two minor earthquakes were recorded in Wilkes County on Sunday night. The first, a 2.6 magnitude earthquake, was measured 1 mile north-east of Hayes at 7:56pm. The second quake, a 2.0 magnitude, was recorded one mile west south-west of Hays at 8:16pm.
The Wilkes Journal-Patriot reports that a spokesman for the Wilkes Communications Center in Wilkesboro said desks there shook and a booming sound was heard, resulting in a dispatcher looking outside to see if a wreck had occurred. Some social media reports from the area also reported hearing two loud booms.
