Smoke Detector Saves Family in Sugar Grove House Fire

A potentially devastating fire was averted early Tuesday morning when a smoke detector alerted a family in Sugar Grove, allowing them to safely evacuate their home.

At approximately 3:00 am on January 27th, Watauga County Communications received a 911 call from the 200 block of Trivette Circle. The family was awakened by a smoke detector alarm, which alerted them to interior smoke in their home.

Multiple emergency agencies responded to the scene, including Beaver Dam, Cove Creek, Zionville, and Fall Creek Fire Departments, along with Watauga County EMS, the Watauga County Fire Marshal's Office, and Mountain Electric.

Thanks to the early warning from the smoke detector, the family was able to exit the residence safely. The structure sustained minimal damage during the incident.

The Fire Marshal's Office is using this incident to remind residents of critical home safety practices:

  • Maintain a minimum three-foot clearance for space heaters
  • Install and maintain working smoke detectors
  • Use carbon monoxide detectors
  • Exercise caution with open flame devices when thawing frozen pipes during cold weather
