The closed section was reopen late Sunday night.  Sgt. Danny Jenkins told The Times-News of Burlington that as many as 134 vehicles were involved in the wrecks, which started with a 5 car wreck around 4pm. The most cars involved in any single collision were 12.

Wet roads and distracted drivers are believed to have started the chain of wrecks.
