The N.C. Department of Transportation is on schedule to complete one Wilkes County bridge rehabilitation project next month and begin another soon after.
A portion of N.C. 115 is currently closed to rehabilitate the 47-year-old bridge over the U.S. 421 Bypass in North Wilkesboro. The rehabilitation will replace two bridge spans.
The project should be finished by Wednesday, Oct. 15, with rehabilitation work on the Brushy Mountain bridge over U.S. 421 set to begin the next day. The Brushy Mountain bridge was built in 1966.
The detour for this project will take motorists to U.S. 421 South, then to N.C. 115, U.S. 421 North, then back to Oakwoods Road. Once side of the bridge is Oakwoods Road, while the other side is Brushy Mountain Road.
Rehabilitation work extends the life of a bridge and ensures it remains safe for motorists.
These projects are part of a $3.1 million contract to improve six Wilkes County bridges. Two of the six projects have already been completed.
