The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public after receiving a report of an individual impersonating a law enforcement officer near the McDowell County/Avery County line on U.S. 221 North near Linville Mountain.
The incident occurred on Tuesday when a victim reported being stopped by a person driving an unmarked dark-colored SUV. According to the report, a blue light was displayed in the dash of the vehicle and was activated when the suspect initiated the traffic stop.
The victim reported that the suspect was not displaying a badge and the vehicle did not have proper law enforcement markings or tags. The suspect was reportedly armed with a firearm, taser and handcuffs and unlawfully searched both the driver and the vehicle.
The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office reminds the public that if you are being pulled over by an unmarked vehicle and have concerns about whether the stop is legitimate, you should turn on your hazard lights, slow down, and proceed to a safe, well-lit and populated area.
If you are unsure or suspicious of the vehicle attempting to stop you, call 911 immediately, provide your location and the vehicle description, and ask telecommunicators to confirm whether a legitimate law enforcement officer is attempting to stop you.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Detective Kyle Gibson with the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office at 828-652-2235, ext. 1222.
