Last Updated on June 23, 2026 2:56 pm

The Avery County Sheriff's Office is alerting the public to unusual door-to-door sales activity in the community.

On June 22, 2026, at approximately 6:30 p.m., deputies were notified of two incidents in the Three Mile Community. In the first, a male subject approached a residence and attempted to convince the occupant to purchase cleaning supplies, which she declined. In the second, a group of three males and one female approached a residence attempting to sell vacuum cleaners.

Deputies responded to the area, located the vehicle and all four individuals, and performed the appropriate checks. No criminal violations were found as a result of their activity. Similar incidents were reported the following day.

The Sheriff's Office offers the following tips for residents who encounter door-to-door salespeople:

Ask for a business card or company name before engaging.

Do not allow anyone inside your residence.

Keep your door locked while communicating with them.

If you are not interested, tell them so and instruct them to leave your property.

If they do not leave in a timely manner, contact the 911 center for a law enforcement response.
