Former Appalachian State Chancellor Dr. Francis (Frank) Borkowski passes

Dr. Francis (Frank) Borkowski, a former Chancellor at Appalachian State, passed away at his home over the weekend at the age of 88.

Dr. Borkowski became the university's fifth leader in 1993, after the retirement of Dr. John E. Thomas. He held the position until 2003.

Among the notable new buildings during his tenure were: The Holmes Convocation Center, a state-of-the-art library, an innovative new student center, new residences and other facilities.

He guided the establishment of the Hayes School of Music and built upon the music school’s programs and facilities, including improved performance halls, studios and a thriving music library. He also championed Appalachian Summer and conceived and instigated the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts.
After his chancellorship, he continued teaching music history at the Hayes School.

Chancellor Francis T. Borkowski, left, gives John E. Thomas, chancellor emeritus, a copy of the latest edition of The Appalachian Faculty Emeriti. The 400-page publication is dedicated to Thomas. It contains approximately 160 photographs and more than 180 biographical sketches of Appalachian faculty (living and deceased) who have received emeriti status following retirement. The book also contains an abbreviated history of the university and information about the institutionÕs five presidents and chancellors. It was edited by Dr. Richard D. Howe, compliance officer for the university. The book is available for $20 from the Office of Compliance Programs at Appalachian State University. For more information, call 262-2124.
