RALEIGH – For the first time, North Carolinians can place legal bets on the Super Bowl, choosing if they want to fly with the Eagles or ride with the Chiefs.

Sunday's Super Bowl will be the first since the N.C. State Lottery Commission approved the start of sports wagering last year after creating a regulatory framework to ensure it is done fairly and responsibly. The framework helps protect North Carolinians who want to have fun betting on their favorite teams in one of the most watched sporting events in the world.

“The benefits of legal sports wagering are that it happens under strong regulations that protect the person placing a bet, ensuring they get their winnings and that their personal information is protected,” said the Commission's Chief Regulatory Officer Sterl Carpenter. “If you choose to bet on the Super Bowl, do it legally with one of the eight licensed operators in North Carolina.”

A player can create an online account with a licensed operator and then place a legal sports wager online or in an approved app. These are the sports wagering platform names you can look for from the licensed operators:

  • Bet365
  • BETMGM
  • Caesars Sportsbook (on behalf of Tribal Casino Gaming Enterprises)
  • DraftKings
  • ESPN BET
  • Fanatics Sportsbook
  • FanDuel
  • Underdog Sports Wagering

Licensed operators provide player protections that are not available through illegal sports wagering sites. Licensed operators must follow state laws and rules that ensure players are eligible to place wagers and that operators treat players fairly.

If you choose to place a wager on the Super Bowl, place your bets for fun. All licensed operators are required to have a responsible gaming program on their sites and apps. These programs offer tools for players, such as deposit and spending limits and time outs. Check your operator's online platform or contact them to learn more.

The Commission also provides additional information about responsible gaming and the N.C Problem Gambling Program, including a 24/7 helpline, on it's Responsible Gaming web page.

Legal sports wagering also benefits the state by raising money that supports collegiate sports, youth sports, and major events, games and attractions. The money results from an 18 percent tax on the gross wagering revenue received by the operators.
