BOONE — The Boone Town Council has scheduled roughly 12 hours of closed-session meetings Monday and Tuesday to consider “the qualifications and conditions of the initial employment of a prospective employee,” according to a special meeting notice issued Friday by Mayor Dalton George.
While the notice does not identify the position, the Town’s ongoing search for a new Town Manager is the only known major personnel decision before the Council.
The Council will meet by videoconference via Zoom in closed session on Monday, June 15, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Tuesday, June 16, from 9:30 a.m. to noon and again from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The closed sessions are authorized under N.C. Gen. Stat. § 143-318.11(a)(1)(6) — to prevent the disclosure of privileged or confidential information — and § 160A-168, which governs personnel records confidentiality.
Background on the Town Manager search
Longtime Boone Town Manager Amy Davis announced her retirement in September 2025 after more than 25 years of service to the Town of Boone, effective December 2025.
On February 25, 2026, the Town Council unanimously approved a contract with Dr. Patricia Mitchell, CEcD, to serve as lead consultant for the Town Manager search.
The closed-session blocks scheduled for next week — roughly 12 hours in total over two days — represent the most concentrated Council time devoted to the search to date, suggesting the Council has narrowed its focus to a finalist or final candidates.
Notice and authority
The special meeting notice was issued under the authority of N.C. Gen. Stat. § 160A-71(b)(1), which governs special meetings of a city council, and is dated June 12, 2026.
By state law, the closed sessions are not open to the public. Any final action — such as a hiring vote — must be taken in open session.
The notice was signed by Mayor Dalton George.
