Boone-area gas prices ticked up slightly this week after five consecutive weeks of declines, with the local low for regular unleaded at $3.62 per gallon — up 8 cents from last Tuesday's area low of $3.54.

Multiple stations are at $3.62, including Sheetz on Chestnut Drive, BP on Blowing Rock Road, Circle K locations on Blowing Rock Road and State Farm Road, Speedway on NC-105 South, and Harris Teeter on Blowing Rock Road. Banner Elk's Speedway is at $3.63.

The slight local uptick comes even as state and national averages continue to ease. The North Carolina average stands at $3.679 per gallon, according to AAA — down from $3.783 last week. The national average is $4.044 per gallon, down from $4.161 last week. AAA noted this week that pump prices have fallen for a third straight week nationally.

Diesel prices continued to ease. The county's diesel low is $4.87 per gallon at the Speedway in Banner Elk. Most Boone-area stations are at $4.99 for diesel, down from the $5.13 to $5.16 range seen last week.

Despite the recent string of declines, prices remain above last year. AAA puts North Carolina's year-ago regular average at $2.796 per gallon.
