A Saturday afternoon fire in Deep Gap may have been the result of high winds in the area. Deep Gap Fire Department was dispatched to the fire, at 604 Mt Zion Road, around 3:15pm when a tree knocked down power lines and caught the surrounding area on fire, according to scanner dispatches at the time.
Jonathan Hodges, with Deep Gap Fire, tells WataugaOnline.com that the fire burned the side of a bank. Hodges also noted that a residential house was in danger along with a wooden shed in the woods, but firefighters were able to stop the blaze before it reached either structure.
The Watauga County Sheriff's Department also responded to the area to help with traffic control. Blue Ridge Electric also responded to the scene to shut off power to the impacted area.
