Boone Fire responds to structure fire caused by discarded smoking materials

Last Updated on January 22, 2026 2:59 pm

Boone Fire was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 1500 Block of Highway 421 South in Boone on Tuesday morning.  Upon arrival, black smoke appeared to be coming from the roof of a single-family residence.  Fire was quickly located in a wall adjacent to the covered front porch and was extinguished.  The fire burned though the exterior siding and into the wall cavity.  The fire was extinguished before entering the roof structure, preventing extensive damage to the house.

An investigation found that the fire was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials that ignited the siding on the front porch. The owner stated that she was notified of the fire by her working smoke alarms.

Boone Fire would like to draw attention to this incident and remind everyone that you may only have a couple of minutes to escape a house fire.  Working smoke alarms are the number one thing that can warn you of a fire and improve your chance of survival.  Please change batteries in your smoke alarms annually, test alarms once per month and replace alarms when they expire, which typically after 10 years.  Smoke and Carbon Monoxide alarms are recommended in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and at least one alarm on each level of the home.  Alarms that are interconnected give occupants the most advance warning.

Further, if you smoke in or around your home, please discard all smoking materials safely.  One safe method is to douse all cigarettes and matches with water and place in a sand filled metal container, away from anything combustible.  Do not discard on the ground, near vegetation or a structure where the items can smolder and catch fire.

Please remember, in ANY emergency, make 911 your first call!  In the event of fire, go outside where it is safe then dial 911 to notify emergency services of the emergency.
