A Raeford man faces multiple charges after leading police on a high-speed chase that reached speeds near 100 mph and forced officers to terminate pursuit when the driver began traveling in the wrong lane toward oncoming traffic.
Angelo McIntyre, 30, was arrested Tuesday following the pursuit that began in Wilkesboro and extended into Elkin before ending with the vehicle abandoned on C.B. Eller School Road.
The incident began at approximately 9 a.m. when Wilkesboro police responded to a report of a vehicle driving erratically in the Lowes Foods parking lot and endangering pedestrians. The vehicle had left the area before officers arrived, but police obtained a description.
An officer later spotted a matching vehicle near U.S. Highway 421 and N.C. Highway 16. When the officer attempted a traffic stop, the driver accelerated to nearly 90 mph and refused to stop.
Officers pursued the vehicle as it traveled south on U.S. Highway 421, reaching speeds around 100 mph before exiting the highway. The suspect then turned north on Clingman Road toward N.C. Highway 268.
As the vehicle approached the Elkin town limits, the driver began traveling in the wrong lane toward oncoming traffic. Wilkesboro police supervisors terminated the pursuit due to the extreme danger.
Elkin police located the vehicle and briefly continued the pursuit before also discontinuing it for safety reasons. The vehicle was found abandoned on C.B. Eller School Road. With assistance from local residents and an off-duty Elkin officer, Elkin police apprehended the suspect.
McIntyre was taken to the Wilkes County Detention Center. He is charged with two counts of felony flee to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, felony possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, aggressive driving, speeding, unsafe movement, driving while license revoked and unsafe passing.
He was also served with an outstanding warrant from Yadkin County for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
