The year-to-date measurement of liquid precipitation at Grandfather Mountain is 40.63 inches of rain, which is 8.6 inches (or 27 percent) above the norm for this time of year.
Although the total for the year is above average, the June measurement came in just below the monthly average. The weather station at the top of Grandfather Mountain recorded the rainfall total of 5.77 inches which is 0.35 inches, or six percent, below the 57-year average rainfall total for June of 6.12 inches.
Grandfather Mountain measures precipitation at multiple locations on the Mountain. Entrance Gate employees recorded 5.81 inches of rain for the month and the naturalist staff recorded 6.02 inches at the weather equipment near the Fudge Shop.
The automatic weather station at the top of Grandfather Mountain recorded the average high temperature for the month as 65.1 degrees and the average low temperature as 53.7 degrees. These numbers read just a bit higher than the State Climate Office data from Mt. Mitchell State Park. The average high temperature at Mt. Mitchell was 62.7 degrees and the average low temperature was 50.5 degrees.
Wind gusts over 60 mph were recorded three times. The highest three-second gust during the month was 89.4 mph recorded June 13.
