Wintery Weather Expected During First Full Week of 2019

Last Updated on January 7, 2019 6:37 am

“Bottomline, enjoy today and Tuesday, because the later half of the week will be a rude return to very cold winterlike temperatures and increasing chances for winter precipitation loom in our future as well.” That's the wording from the National Weather Service (NWS) in a Monday morning weather briefing as we begin the first full week of 2019.

Gusty winds, cold temperatures and snow will be the three weather stories for the High Country. NWS says that gusty northwest winds will develop behind a strong cold front Tuesday night into Wednesday. Sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph will be possible. These winds will also drive wind chills to as low as zero to 15 degrees below zero at times, especially Wednesday morning.

Snow showers are expected Tuesday night and Wednesday, some which could be briefly heavy at times NWS adds. Snow accumulations 2 to 4 inches are possible in Watauga County.
