Winter Weather Advisories Issued for the High Country — Monday, March 16, 2026

The National Weather Service has issued Winter Weather Advisories for the High Country on Monday, March 16, with snow and high winds expected to impact the Monday evening commute.

Watauga and Ashe Counties (NWS Blacksburg)
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 2 PM Monday to 2 AM Tuesday above 3,500 feet. Snow accumulations up to three inches are expected above 3,500 feet. Winds may gust as high as 55 mph.


Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday evening commute. Strong winds could cause tree damage.
Avery, Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Swain, Haywood, and Graham Counties (NWS Greenville-Spartanburg)


A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 1 PM Monday to 3 AM Tuesday above 3,500 feet. Snow accumulations up to three inches are expected above 3,500 feet, with higher amounts above 5,000 feet. A dusting to possibly an inch is expected in some lower elevation locations. Winds may gust as high as 55 mph.


The snow will create snow-covered roads and produce scattered power outages. The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday evening commute. Strong winds could cause damage to trees and power lines.
