What’s Happening in the High Country: March 26–28, 2026

There's plenty happening in the High Country this week, from a nationally known rock band taking the stage at App State to a beloved Roald Dahl musical at Watauga High School and Easter fun for the whole family.

Young the Giant — Thursday, March 26
The indie rock band Young the Giant performs live at the Holmes Convocation Center at Appalachian State University in Boone on Thursday, March 26. Support comes from Cigarettes After Sunset. The concert is presented by App State's Appalachian Popular Programming Society (APPS). Tickets are on sale now. Visit appstatesports.com for ticket information.

Matilda the Musical Jr. — Thursday through Saturday, March 26–28
Watauga High School Theatre brings Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical Jr. to the WHS Ross Auditorium for three nights. Shows run Thursday, March 26, Friday, March 27, and Saturday, March 28, all at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 and available online at our.show/whsmatilda. Come out and support the talented students of Watauga High School Theatre.

Easter Egg Splash — Friday, March 27
The Watauga Community Recreation Center hosts its Easter Egg Splash on Friday, March 27, beginning at 5 p.m. with over 1,500 eggs and rubber ducks floating in the pool for kids ages 0–12. Activities in the party rooms begin at 4:30 p.m. Participants will exchange their eggs for a bag of candy and a chance to win prize baskets. Pool access continues until 7:30 p.m. Registration is $8 per person and space is limited. Register in person at the Watauga Community Recreation Center, 231 Complex Drive, Boone, or call (828) 264-9511.

Boonerang Battle of the Bands — Thursday, March 26
The Town of Boone and Boonerang Music and Arts Festival present the first of two 2026 Battle of the Bands showcases at the Appalachian Theatre in downtown Boone on Thursday, March 26, at 7 p.m. Four bands — His & Hers, Blue Ridge Betty, Midlife Trip, and Fern Hill — compete for a $500 cash prize and a paid performance slot at the Boonerang Festival on June 20. Blowing Rock Easter Egg Hunt — Saturday, March 28
The Town of Blowing Rock hosts an Easter egg hunt at Memorial Park on Saturday, March 28, beginning at 10 a.m. The event includes an Easter egg hunt and photos with the Easter Bunny. The event is free and open to the public.
