ASHE COUNTY – A weapon was discovered at Ashe County Middle School on Friay after a student reported its presence, according to the Ashe County Sheriff's Office.
School administrators, along with the School Resource Officer, responded immediately. The weapon was quickly located and secured, and the student involved was identified without delay.
“At no point was there an active threat to students or staff,” Sheriff B. Phil Howell said in a statement. “The school remained secure throughout the response.”
Dr. Eisa Cox, Superintendent with Ashe County Schools, sent a blackboard call and email to all middle school families notifying them of the situation at approximately 12:30 p.m.
The Sheriff's Office is conducting a full investigation and cannot release additional details at this time. Appropriate disciplinary and legal actions are being taken in accordance with school district policy and North Carolina law.
“We are proud of the student for their willingness to come forward,” Sheriff Howell said. “Reporting concerns, even when it may be difficult, is one of the most important ways we keep our schools and community safe. That action made a real difference today.”
The Ashe County Sheriff's Office continues to work closely with Ashe County Schools to ensure every report is taken seriously and handled swiftly.
“The safety of our children is a shared responsibility among law enforcement, school staff, parents, and students,” Sheriff Howell said. “I encourage everyone to continue communicating, reporting concerns, and looking out for one another.”
