The County will open the new outbound scale at the Watauga County Transfer Station on Monday, June 9th. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 10:00 AM.
As part of this project, all vehicles entering and leaving the solid waste facility must cross the scales. This change removed the need for U-turns that drivers had to make to ‘weigh out’ after unloading. The new outbound scale should cut wait times for customers and create a safer, clearer traffic flow. Drivers dropping off non-bagged trash, special recycling, brush, scrap metal/appliances, or picking up mulch must turn right off of Landfill Road to access the scales.
Customers going to the Convenience Site for bagged household trash and recycling can still enter as they have in the past.
The facility upgrade aims to improve customer service and safety. The project also included a new scale house, new inbound scales, a paved visitor parking lot with more spaces and a new mechanically controlled facility gate.
