Watauga County Sheriff’s Office Reminds Of Continued Phone Scams Targeting Residents

Last Updated on July 15, 2016 12:33 pm

The Watauga County Sheriff's Office is reminding residents about the recent rash of attempted phone scams in our area.

WCSO has received reports of callers stating that they are with the IRS and requesting both money and personal information during the conversation. Be aware that these calls are most likely scams and do not give out your social security number or provide any type of financial information.

The department also has reports of fraudulent calls made under the guise of political party fundraising. As always use caution and do not give out any personal information or make financial contributions over the phone. If you desire to contribute to a cause the Sheriff's Office suggest researching the organization requesting the support, and then contributing in the traditional way.

In the wake of tragic events the department often hears of scam calls attempting to prey on those who are willing to give support to those in need. If you have concerns about the legitimacy of a phone call contact WCSO on the non-emergency line at 828-264-3761.
