Today, Thursday April 23, 2020, the Watauga County School system sets a new record for the most number of days closed.

40 days is the new official number, but that will continue to grow due to the ongoing COVID-19 closures. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper is expected to announce this afternoon more guidance regarding on-going school closures statewide. Governor Cooper, by way of an Executive Order, closed schools on Monday March 16 through Monday, March 30. The Governor later extended the order for schools to be closed until May 15th.

For the school calendar year 2019-2020, Watauga County Schools have missed 11 days due to weather and now 29 days for COVID-19 as of Thursday April 23, 2020.

The new total surpasses the previous mark of 39 days for the 1977-78 calendar year. The now third most missed days is 33 days in 1976-77. Both of those events were due to winter storms.
