Watauga County Schools Closed Due To Winter Weather For First Time In 2016-17 Year

A winter storm that impacted the area since Friday has lead to the first full day closure for Watauga County Schools, and other local school systems, for the first time this winter season.

As much as 8 inches of snow fell in Watauga, with many locations reporting at least 7 inches through Saturday afternoon, according to reports from the National Weather Service. Single digit temperatures, and wind chills below zero, for much of Saturday night and Sunday continue to cause some travel issues, leading to the school closures.

Watauga County Schools will be closed for students on Monday January 9, marking the 221st day that schools have been closed in January since the 1975-76 school year. In total, 619 days have been missed in the 42 years that school closing records have been kept.
