BOONE – A Watauga County road will be closed through late summer while contractors replace a bridge.
Smith-Rowe, LLC, of Mount Airy, was awarded the $2.4 million contract to replace the bridge on River Road near Castle Ford Road.
The project is addressing aging infrastructure and damage from Hurricane Helene while improving overall safety for the public. The new bridge’s drilled piers and spread footers will make it more resilient to future storms.
Detour signs are guiding drivers around River Road at Castle Ford Road.
River Road will reopen by fall. The entire project is scheduled for completion in late spring 2026.
