UNC Health Appalachian has introduced a new Specialty Care Transport (SCT) service to enhance the safe, timely transfer of critically ill or injured patients between healthcare facilities.
SCT is a high-level, interfacility ground ambulance transport that provides continuous, intensive care during patient transfers. Staffed by specialized healthcare professionals, the ambulance is equipped with advanced, state-of-the-art technology to support patients requiring higher-level care. The addition of SCT significantly reduces transfer delays and offers a more cost-effective alternative to air transport.
“Before, we were waiting up to several hours, often necessitating air transport at a huge cost to the patient,” said Greg Miller, Chief Nursing Officer at UNC Health Appalachian. “We can now transport our patients more expeditiously and more cost-effectively.”
The SCT program also supports local emergency services by reducing reliance on Watauga County EMS for interfacility transports, helping ensure those resources remain available for emergency response. The service primarily supports patients at Watauga Medical Center and in the Avery County market, while also assisting surrounding areas as needed.
“At UNC Health Appalachian, every decision we make is grounded in what is best for our patients and our community,” said Nathan Nipper, CEO of UNC Health Appalachian. “Specialty Care Transport allows us to move critically ill patients more quickly, safely, and cost-effectively, while also preserving vital emergency resources for our region.”
