USDA Forest Service firefighters are currently responding to two wildfires in western North Carolina.
Poplar Fire — Mitchell County
The Poplar Fire is burning near 100 acres north of Poplar along the east side of NC-197 in Mitchell County on the Pisgah National Forest. About 60 personnel and a helicopter are assigned to the incident.
The fire is burning in an area heavily impacted by Hurricane Helene, where extensive downed trees are contributing to increased wildfire intensity. The cause is under investigation.
NC-197 past Poplar Creek Road remains closed. The Appalachian Trail near Indian Grave Gap (NOBO mile 352.9) is also impacted — hikers should exercise caution and follow all posted instructions.
Tarkiln Ridge Fire — Clay County
The Tarkiln Ridge Fire is burning in rugged terrain northwest of Hayesville in Clay County near Fires Creek on the Nantahala National Forest. The lightning-caused fire was first reported Monday, March 23. Thirty-two personnel are currently responding.
The fire is in an area previously identified for prescribed burns to reduce hazardous fuel loads — conditions worsened by Hurricane Helene debris.
The public is advised to avoid both fire areas and follow all posted closures.
