State Superintendent Maurice “Mo” Green and members of the regional NCDPI team visited Watauga County Schools this week to learn more about the district’s innovative practices and alignment with the NCDPI and the state board of education’s educational goals to “Achieving Educational Excellence.”
The day began with a presentation of Watauga County Schools’ strategic plan and its strong connection to the NCDPI and State Board of Education’s eight strategic pillars.
Superintendent Dr. Leslie Alexander highlighted how Watauga is already leading the state in many of the goals outlined in the statewide plan to make North Carolina’s public schools the best in the nation by 2030. Additional district leaders shared their areas of focus, Dr. Chris Blanton discussed efforts to retain high-quality teachers, Dr. Tierra Stark emphasized the district’s commitment to school safety and student wellness, and Mr. Norman celebrated Watauga’s academic achievements, including being ranked fourth overall in the state and earning the top spot for seventh and eighth-grade ELA performance despite missing over a month of school last year.
Following the presentations, the group toured Watauga High School to explore the Watauga Innovation Academy and its career pathways, which include certifications in health sciences, welding, drafting, and automotive service.
The visit continued at Valle Crucis School, where principal Dr. Bonnie Smith welcomed the team for a tour of the new facility on its opening day. Mr. Green and his team had the opportunity to meet teachers, speak with students, and experience firsthand the enthusiasm surrounding the school’s opening. The day wrapped up with a visit to the campus of The Valle Crucis Conference Center and Holy Cross Episcopal Church, which served as the temporary home for K–5 students since last year’s hurricane.
There, the group saw firsthand the remarkable resilience of the Watauga community and the district’s steadfast dedication to supporting students and families as they continue to rebuild and move forward together.
