Last Updated on July 12, 2025 10:45 am

Wilkesboro, NC: On Friday the Wilkesboro Police Department received a call of a disturbance with shots fired at the Wilkesboro YMCA. Our officers, along with deputies from the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene and began securing the area.

The YMCA staff initiated their lockdown procedures to ensure the safety of those inside. It was determined that the incident occurred outside in the parking lot between individuals and that those individuals had left the area before officers arrived.

No injured persons were located and everyone inside the facility was unharmed. During the investigation a person of interest was identified and is now in custody.

We do not have any reason to believe this incident was directed toward the YMCA, its staff or its members. This incident appears to have stemmed from an altercation between individuals who were in an earlier argument inside the YMCA, and it continued as they left the facility. We do not believe there is any further threat or danger of violence at the Wilkesboro YMCA as this incident was not directed at the facility or any staff members.

This incident is still under investigation, and we are asking anyone who may have information to contact the department at 336-667-7277. Further details will be released at a later date.
