The transition from middle to high school can sometimes be difficult, both for students and their parents. But the Watauga County Schools Student Services department, in conjunction with GEAR UP, is stepping in to help.

This month (January 2017), the two groups are set to host Winterfest, an event that aims to help WCS eighth-graders transition to Watauga High School by giving students from each of the districts eight elementary schools a chance to meet and tour the high school’s facilities.

Winterfest, which will take the place of similar events held in the past, will be held from 3-5:15 p.m. Jan. 10 for students currently at Cove Creek, Hardin Park, Mabel and Valle Crucis, and Jan. 12 for students currently at Bethel, Blowing Rock, Green Valley, Parkway and Two Rivers schools.

Each school has been assigned a date that coincides with parent information meetings that parents of rising ninth-graders are asked to attend.

The Parent Nights will provide students and parents with important information about ninth grade registration, graduation requirements and opportunities and expectations at Watauga High School.

It will also be a time when parents and students will be able to meet some of the key people who will be working with them during the students’ freshmen year.

The Parent Night portion of the evening will be held in the WHS auditorium from 5:30-6:30 p.m. It is expected that parents and students attend.

Snow dates for the meetings are set for Jan. 17 and 19.
