NEWLAND – The Town of Newland Police Department is alerting local businesses about a counterfeit currency incident that occurred this week.

According to police, two individuals passed a counterfeit $100 bill at Highlander's. Multiple neighboring businesses in the area were also victimized. A police report has been filed to document the incident.

The Newland Police Department is asking local business owners and employees to be vigilant when accepting large bills and to contact law enforcement if they encounter suspicious currency.

How to Identify Counterfeit Currency:

Hold the bill up to light to check for a watermark and security thread
Check for color-shifting ink on newer bills
Feel the texture – genuine currency has a distinct feel due to raised printing
Compare the bill to a genuine bill of the same denomination
Use a counterfeit detection pen if available

What to Do If You Suspect Counterfeit Currency:

Do not return the bill to the customer
Delay the person if possible without putting yourself at risk
Observe the person's description and any companions
Note vehicle information if available
Contact local law enforcement immediately
Handle the bill as little as possible to preserve evidence

Business owners who encounter suspicious individuals attempting to pass large bills should contact the Newland Police Department immediately.
