WEST JEFFERSON – The N.C. Department of Transportation is inviting the public to a meeting and hearing on Thursday to discuss a proposed amendment of the New River State Park Dedicated Nature Preserve.

The hearing will follow an open house style meeting scheduled from 5-6:30 p.m. on Thursday at Elk Shoals Chapel, 349 Methodist Camp Road. The formal presentation hearing begins at 6:30 p.m.

A proposed project is needed to replace a structurally deficient bridge — safe but old and deteriorating — over South Fork New River. The new bridge requires use of land currently owned by the nature preserve.

People may also submit comments at the meeting, or by June 8 via phone at 336-931-9136, by email dradams@ncdot.gov or direct mail to Daniel Adams, Division 11 Project Team Lead, 801 Statesville Road, North Wilkesboro, N.C. 28659.

NCDOT will provide auxiliary aids and services under the Americans with Disabilities Act for disabled people who wish to participate in this meeting. Anyone requiring special services should contact Tony Gallagher, Environmental Analysis Unit, at 1598 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, N.C. 27699-1598, 919-707-6069 or magallagher@ncdot.gov as early as possible so arrangements can be made.

Those who do not speak English, or have a limited ability to read, speak or understand English, may receive interpretive services upon request prior by calling 1-800-481-6494.
