On Monday August 17 at around 11 am a 911 call was received in regards to an attempted kidnapping on Eagle Ln. in Vilas.
According to a report from the Watauga County Sheriff's Office, an unknown male had driven up Eagle Ln and encountered some adults walking.
After being informed that Eagle Ln was a private drive, the male continued ahead and ended up at a residence there. The male entered the residence and attempted to order a 10 year old child to get into his vehicle, according to the report. The child told the man no, and then he attempted to abduct a 3 year old child.
The child’s grandmother struggled with the male which prevented the abduction. The male left the residence and in the process encountered another adult, and attempted to abduct her as well. She resisted him and the male grabbed the family dog and fled in his vehicle.
During the 911 call, the caller provided specific and accurate information about the vehicle, a red Toyota truck, the report states. Deputies encountered the vehicle on 421 and were able to stop the individual on Greer Ln.
The suspect was identified as Christopher James Chandler age 43 from Hudson, NC.
Chandler has been charged with:
3 counts of second degree kidnapping
2 counts of child abduction
Felony Breaking and entering
Common law robbery
Larceny of a dog
Animal cruelty
Possession of stolen goods.
He is under 155,000 bond at the Watauga County Jail
