Avery County experienced a major power outage on Saturday night (April 30, 2016). The entire Avery County portion of the power grid was offline from Beech Mountain to Jonas Ridge/Linville Falls area, according to the Avery Journal-Times newspaper. The problem appeared to be weather related the newspaper added.
There were some social media reports that power was off for as long as 5 hours, and possibly longer. Avery County is primarily served by Mountain Electric
