Local Man Charged With Arson After April Fire In Meat Camp Community

Watauga County Sheriff Len Hagaman has announced charges against a local man after a fire in the Meat Camp community in April.

On Thursday, Sheriff Hagman said Clifford Earl Canter, of Boone, has been arrested and charged with one count of Arson after an investigation by the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office and the Watauga County Fire Marshal.

On April 16, 2019 the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a domestic dispute between family members that occurred in the Meat Camp area. While dealing with one side of the domestic situation at the Magistrate’s Office, Watauga County Communications dispatched a structure fire in the 4,000 block of Meat Camp Road. The Watauga County Sheriff’s Office, Watauga County Fire Marshal’s Office, Meat Camp, Todd, Creston and Boone Fire Department’s as well as Watauga Medic’s and Watauga County Rescue Squad responded to a fully involved structure fire to a single wide trailer. 

Jay Kerley, Watauga County Assistant Fire Marshal, told WataugaOnline.com the day after the fire that the home, at 4816 Meat Camp Road, was a total loss. He added no one was home at the time.
