THURMOND – U.S. 21 South, near the overlook north of Thurmond, will close for retaining wall maintenance starting Monday, July 15, weather permitting. The overlook also will be closed while a contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation uses the area to store materials.
Crews will repair the retaining wall by installing soil nails and shotcrete to reinforce the existing structure.
The lane will be closed Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The lane is expected to be open when work is not being done. Transportation officials anticipate completing the operation in late August.
Short delays are expected. Drivers should use caution and heed the direction of flaggers on scene until repairs are finished later this summer.
