JOHNSON COUNTY, TN – The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about individuals going door-to-door claiming to represent “Whitlow Paving and Sealing Company,” particularly targeting elderly residents.
According to the sheriff's office, it has not been determined whether these individuals are legitimately affiliated with the company or are using the company name without authorization. The warning is part of a broader alert about a commonly reported contractor-related scam involving claims of “leftover asphalt.”
The “leftover asphalt” scam typically involves individuals approaching homeowners, often elderly residents, claiming they have extra materials from a nearby job and can offer a discounted paving service. These scammers may use high-pressure sales tactics and demand immediate payment, often in cash.
Common Warning Signs of Paving Scams:
Unsolicited door-to-door offers for paving services
Claims of “leftover materials” from nearby jobs
Pressure to make immediate decisions
Requests for cash payment or large upfront deposits
Lack of written contracts or business credentials
Unwillingness to provide references or proof of insurance
Vehicles without proper company identification
How to Protect Yourself:
Use caution with all unsolicited service offers, especially door-to-door solicitations
Verify contractor credentials, including business licenses and insurance
Request written estimates and contracts before agreeing to any work
Check references and online reviews before hiring any contractor
Never pay the full amount upfront
Get multiple quotes for any significant home improvement project
Be especially wary of high-pressure sales tactics
The Johnson County Sheriff's Office emphasized that the purpose of the notice is not to harm the reputation of any legitimate business, but to ensure residents are aware of scam tactics and can protect themselves from fraud.
Residents who encounter suspicious door-to-door solicitations or believe they may have been targeted by this scam should report the activity to the Johnson County Sheriff's Office immediately.
