Tree pollen levels across the High Country are climbing back up Tuesday after a brief dip Monday, with strong northwest winds pushing conditions into the high-to-extreme range for allergy sufferers.
WeatherBug's Boone-specific pollen forecast shows the index at 8.8 out of 10 — rated Medium-High — with Cedar/Juniper, Maple, and Alder as the primary contributors. Drier air returning Tuesday is driving the rebound after Monday's rain provided a temporary washout of pollen from the air.
AccuWeather's Boone forecast shows tree pollen ranging from High to Extreme through the week. Current wind conditions are northwest at 16 mph with gusts reaching 44 mph — conditions that actively disperse pollen and keep concentrations elevated. Ragweed, grass, and mold remain low. Dust and dander is rated High.
Late March through early April is peak season for tree pollen across North Carolina, and this year's season has been especially pronounced. Dry conditions through much of the winter helped prime the trees, and warm temperatures forecast through mid-week — highs in the upper 60s — will keep pollen production elevated.
Tips for managing symptoms during high pollen periods:
- Keep windows and doors closed at home and in the car — use air conditioning instead
- Shower and change clothes after spending time outdoors to avoid tracking pollen inside
- Avoid outdoor activity in the early morning hours when pollen concentrations are typically highest
- Take allergy medication before symptoms peak rather than waiting until you're uncomfortable
- If a rescue inhaler isn't providing expected relief, contact a physician or visit urgent care
