Gas prices in the High Country have surged roughly 70 cents per gallon since WataugaOnline launched its weekly gas prices report on March 6, as the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran continues to keep oil prices elevated.
Here's where prices stand as of Sunday, March 22, 2026:
- Boone Area (Regular): $3.79/gallon (verified in person)
- Diesel (Local): $5.19/gallon
- North Carolina Average: $3.71/gallon
- National Average: $3.94/gallon
The rapid increase has been driven by disruptions to oil shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately 20 percent of the world's oil supply passes. Crude oil prices have topped $100 per barrel multiple times in recent weeks.
The White House has announced the release of 172 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve over four months to help combat rising prices, but analysts say the move has not yet provided meaningful relief at the pump.
WataugaOnline publishes a weekly gas prices report each week.
