Grandfather Mountain recorded two different wind gusts over 100 mph on Wednesday, January 9, 2019.
The first gust of 100.4 mph occurred during the 1 am time frame, with an air temperature of 28.6 degrees and a wind chill of 7.4 degrees above zero. The second and largest measurement of the day was 101.3 mph in the 8am hour. The air temperature at the time was 19.2 degrees resulting in a wind chill of -6.1.
A gust of 101.9 mph was recorded on the mountain on Friday, March 2, 2018. Gusts of 105 mph and 103 mph were recorded in October 2012 .
As impressive as those gusts are, they are still far from the record of 120.7 mph which occurred in December 2012, according to articles posted on WataugaOnline.com in December 2012 and January 2013.
