Former North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt, who served as the state's 69th and 71st Governor for a total of 16 years, has passed away. The announcement was made by his daughter, Lieutenant Governor Rachel Hunt, and the Hunt family on Thursday.

“It is with deep sadness that I share the passing of my beloved daddy and hero, former Governor Jim Hunt,” Lieutenant Governor Rachel Hunt said in a statement. “He devoted his life to serving the people of North Carolina, guided by a belief that public service should expand opportunity, strengthen communities, and always put people first. His leadership and compassion left a lasting impact on the lives of countless North Carolinians.”

“To our family, he was a loving husband, dad, and granddad whose kindness and steady hand shaped our lives in immeasurable ways,” Hunt continued. “We are profoundly grateful for the outpouring of love and support as we mourn and celebrate his extraordinary life.”

Governor Josh Stein released a statement honoring Hunt's legacy and contributions to North Carolina.

“I can think of no one who shaped North Carolina's recent successes as much as Governor Jim Hunt,” Stein said. “Governor for 16 years, he was a visionary who founded Smart Start, raised teacher pay, protected air quality, and created the NC Biotech Center. On a personal level, he was a mentor and dear friend. Anna and I are keeping Carolyn, Rachel, and the entire Hunt family in our thoughts and prayers. May Governor Hunt's memory be a blessing. He certainly was for North Carolina.”

The Hunt family released a statement expressing their gratitude for support during this difficult time.

“Our family is deeply saddened to share the passing of James B. Hunt, Jr.,” the family said. “He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and public servant, whose life and work touched so many across our state. We are thankful for the prayers and support for our family during this time.”

Information about memorial arrangements will be shared in the coming days.
