Dr. Scott Elliott Named New Superintendent For Watauga County Schools

In a special meeting on Thursday evening the Watauga County Board of Education named Dr. Scott Elliott as the new Superintendent for Watauga County Schools.

Dr. Elliott is currently the Assistant Superintendent for Transylvania County Schools. The current interim Superintendent, Dr. David Fonseca, contract expires on June 30 and the Board of Education planned on hiring someone to fill the position starting on July 1 according to reports.

According to a 2010 press release announcing his appointment to the Blue Ridge Community College Board of Trustees, Dr. Elliott is a native of Marion, NC and graduated from McDowell High School in 1992. He earned the Master of Arts in Education, Education Specialist, and Doctor of Education degrees from Western Carolina University and completed his undergraduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

In 2000 he was named Teacher of the Year for Transylvania County Schools. Prior to teaching in Transylvania County Schools he worked as an instructor for Blue Ridge Community College.

A former member of the Watauga County Board Of Education tells WataugaRoads.com that Dr. Elliott interviewed twice with the members of that board when the position was open in 2011-2012. The position was later filled by the hiring of David Kafitz. Dr. Fonseca has been the acting Superintendent since March 2013.
