UPDATE 5:18 PM – At this time, the North Carolina Forest service has released some of the heavy equipment deployed to the fire.  Backburns are still being conducted in the area, but at this time the fire is contained.

Multiple fire departments are battling a wildfire that has grown to 2-3 acres in the Beaverdam area of Watauga County Friday afternoon.

Watauga County Communications received a 911 call at approximately 1:45 p.m. reporting a half-acre uncontrolled fire in the area. Upon arrival, responding crews found the fire had already expanded and was climbing through the woods near the Lost Ridge Trail area off Forest Grove Road.

Seven agencies are currently on scene, including Beaverdam Fire Department, Cove Creek Fire Department, Zionville Fire Department, Boone Fire Department, the Watauga County Rescue Squad, the Watauga County Fire Marshal's Office and the North Carolina Forest Service.

The Forest Service has requested additional resources to combat the blaze. Hand crews and heavy equipment are currently working to contain the fire.

The Watauga County Fire Marshal is reminding residents to use caution or refrain from outdoor burning during dry, breezy periods, which can allow fires to spread rapidly.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
