The continued trend of higher than normal temperatures for December will continue as the year comes to an end, but a big cool down is on the way to start 2022.
For the final day of the year, high temperatures will again be in the lower 60s. That will mark the 12th day in the month with temperatures in the 60s. While New Year's Day is forecast to also be in the 60s, a change starting on Sunday night will bring more winter-like conditions to the area.
The National Weather Service (NWS) says that Sunday night will bring rain showers in the evening changing to snow showers. Little or no accumulation is expected. Lows around 20 and wind chill values as low as 10 above can be expected.
Monday is much cooler with sunshine and highs in the mid-30s. Wind chills as low as 5 above in the morning. Lows Monday night in the lower 20s under clear skies.
Highs in the 40s for Tuesday and Wednesday, upper 20s for lows Tuesday night.
Also of note will be gusty winds Friday night and New Year's Day. Gusts 20 to 35 mph can be expected, which may reach Wind Advisory levels for some areas along the crest of the Blue Ridge, according to NWS.
