Bull Rider Dies After Sustaining Severe Injuries at Deep Gap Event

A 21-year-old man has died after sustaining severe injuries while participating in a bull riding event in Deep Gap, according to the Watauga County Sheriff's Office.

Emergency responders were dispatched to 280 Livestock Market Road at 10:08 p.m. on Nov. 20 in reference to a reported traumatic injury, according to the WCSO.

Watauga Medics, Deep Gap Volunteer Fire Department members and deputies from the Watauga County Sheriff's Office arrived on scene and located a male who had suffered severe injuries while participating in the bull riding event.

The victim was identified as Austin Keith, 21, of Granville, North Carolina. Keith was transported by air to Johnson City Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The Watauga County Sheriff's Office is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The WCSO extended “its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones affected by this tragic loss” in a statement.
